Chimonobambusa quadrangularis

Square bamboo
Here is a bamboo with a difference. An ancient Chinese legend says that a 4th century alchemist, Ko-Kung, planted his chopsticks in the ground which rooted magically and gave rise to this square bamboo. Just like Ko-Kung chopsticks, this bamboo forms into square culms. These have four distinct sides with short branches that grow in clusters. The wide spaces between culms admit light to show off its striking silhouettes. The culms themselves are matt greyish-green in colour. An impressive plant, its glossy, gracefully bending green leaves make this an elegant bamboo. Very pronounced nodes give it an especially oriental look. Growing very well in cool damp conditions, it is well worth trying out in your garden. While generally hardy, a very severe winter may damage leaves, but the deep growing rhizomes will be unharmed. This is a woodland bamboo and prefers light shade to shade, and also shelter from the wind. Spread 5-18ft.
