Sasa palmata nebulosa

Sasa palmata nebulosa

A very tropical looking bamboo, this plant carries huge leaves at the end of long thin culms and branches. Really very foreign-looking. The form name Nebulosa refers to the cloudy or nebulous markings on the culm. When grown in masses there is a distinctly flat topped appearance to the canopy of leaves. They grow in untidy tangled masses which curve upwards and lean in all directions. Even with no wind, there will always be one leaf oscillating madly. Introduced in 1889 in Britain, this bamboo is a native of Japan where it is highly prized for its distinctive markings and wonderful foliage. The leaves' shade soon blots out any competing plants underneath. You must give this bamboo lots of room and it can be a splendid sight in your garden if you have space to let it go. A wonderful plant.
