 | Fargesia The Fargesia genus is extremely well suited to the climate of northern Europe as it is very hardy and reliable. All are clumping, well behaved and lend themselves to hedging and screening.
They originate from high altitudes in China across Burma and the Himalayas. In general, they are forest floor plants good for semi-shade and shade positions. Full of flowing, weeping foliage moving in the wind, glazed in winter and a green abundance in summer. An excellent host for bird life and useful for growing in containers.

 | Phyllostachys This popular genus provides a large selection of differing stem colours, diameters and heights, useful to gardeners, designers, landscapers and architects. They are architecture in themselves.

 | Chusquea Chusquea is the genus native to the southern Americas, growing from Mexico to the Argentine. The stems are completely solid and the soft and fine leaves develop mainly on branches from the nodes.
 | Thamnocalamus A genus of clumping bamboos with delicate small leaves. The culms are often waxy and some have a blue-grey sheen. The forms can vary in hardiness but all contain some of the most beautiful and useful garden features for the temperate garden. All forms curl their leaves in strong light, but when shade arrives, they unfold again into their full beauty. They all look superb and are better planted in shady places out of cold winds.

 | Pseudosasa Not a large family but known for its straight culms and in some members for their leaf colouring. Japonica is very hardy. It is excellent for hedging and screening.
 | X Hibanobambusa It is a bi-generic cross that was found after two bamboos had flowered at the same time in the same location - a great rarity even in the most wild situation. The parents were a Sasa and a Phyllostachys. The garden qualities of X Hibanobambusa are effective and unique in colour and form. The form Shiroshima has some of the largest and most brightly variegated evergreen leaves available to the gardener.

 | Sasa A large group of dwarf size bamboos, often with little variation between them. The large Sasa have a bold, almost jungle-like effect. Slow to establish., once in the garden they all love to dominate. Looking great in pots, they will persist in finding a way to spread, creeping up and over, under and through. So it is a matter of loving them and taking your chances. Bamboos with attitude here!

 | Yushania They are a lovely bunch with graceful habits. With mostly dark green culms, these are fine bamboos. There is one, Pitt White that was propagated from Devon so in one sense this is a local boy. They are hardy and can be happy in a woodland situation.
 | Indocalamus A hardy genus of large leaved bamboos. Thin culms and rather large, strong leaves makes a plant that is good for ground cover. Culms in some of the family are arched and delicate which makes them suitable for containers.

 | Qionzhuea An ornamental bamboo used for different purposes ranging from walking stick, mat weaving, and papermaking to harvesting the young shoots to eat. The culms can range from light yellowish brown, brown, green and to yellowish green. The whole family is delightfully decorative. Nice to have around the garden and still very recent to our lands.

 | Drepanostachyum Here are some handsome bamboos from the far Himalayan mountains. Many will withstand several degrees of frost. Given some shelter in a mild position with good air humidity, these bamboos grow into graceful plants. With very small, thin leaves and multiple branches of uniform size which together in groups give a pompon silhouette, this bamboo can grow fast even in its first year. Altogether nice plants.
